Tec Marina runners gear up for the Cardiff Half Marathon

Tec Marina Running Team Tec Marina marathon team pose before their training session.

On October 1st, a group of 14 runners from various Tec Marina companies will take part in a half marathon spanning the whole city of Cardiff, with the route taking them right passed our office space.

The team are aiming to raise £3,000 for Tŷ Hafan, one of the leading UK children’s palliative care charities based throughout Wales. The charity ensures that local children suffering from terminal illnesses and their families can make the most out of their time left together.

Louise Cornelius, a runner from OpenGenius, said…

We all voted to decide on which charity to fundraise for… and I’m delighted that Tŷ Hafan won the vote. It’s great to be running for a charity so close to home!

You can donate to their cause on JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/TecMarina

We wish them the best of luck on the day!

Tec Marina residents wrack their brains to raise money for charity

Tec Marina Quiz

The atrium of Tec Marina was packed yesterday as residents teamed up to test their general knowledge in a Battle of the Building Quiz and try their luck in a raffle. The event was a huge success with £225 being raised in aid of the Oxford Cystic Fibrosis Centre, which provides specialist care to adults with cystic fibrosis from across the Thames Valley. The resident responsible for organising the quiz, FRS Solutions employee Katie Hathaway, had this to say:

‘Cystic fibrosis is a medical and ethical nightmare at times, but the specialist doctors, nurses and emergency personnel who care for patients and make them feel as comfortable as possible are the real heroes. With a little extra funds and a little more awareness raised, we can be miniature heroes too.’

All of us here at Tec Marina are proud to have supported such a wonderful cause, and the winners of the quiz are no doubt proud to receive their fabulous prizes!

Tesla Day at Tec Marina

Tesla close up

Last Wednesday, the Tesla team travelled from Bristol in their finest and fastest cars to spend the day at Tec Marina. The fleet included the world’s quickest production car, the Tesla Model S P100D. As the cars pulled up outside, our residents soon came pouring out for a peek at the supercars.

Tec Marina residents enjoyed test drives throughout the day. At lunchtime, Tec Marina provided a buffet lunch, and the Tesla team presented a talk about the history, innovative technology and exciting future of the company, which drew in quite a crowd.

The day was a huge success, with the cars stirring up a big buzz of excitement around the building! Take a look at photos from the day below.

A Workplace Defibrillator for Tec Marina

AED sign

At Tec Marina we are committed to providing a happy, healthy and safe working environment for all our residents, and this week saw the arrival of the building’s very own defibrillator.

A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. The chances of surviving a cardiac arrest are increased if emergency treatment is given as soon as possible. Almost half of all casualties are successfully resurrected when defibrillation is given in the first four minutes of the person collapsing – so having a defibrillator in the workplace will certainly increase survival chances.

13 Tec Marina residents have undergone training on how to use the defibrillator, to give them the confidence to provide a speedy response in emergency situations.

Red Nose Day at Tec Marina

RND

On Friday 24th March, we joined in the fun taking place around the country for Red Nose Day. Nothing gets Tec Marina’s atrium more full than the temptation of cake and table tennis tournaments, and our Red Nose Day had the two in abundance. We played sweep-stake games, ran ping pong competitions, and held a delicious bake sale. The total money raised around the UK on this year’s Red Nose Day is stand at a whopping £73,026,234 so far – and this figure is still rising! All donations will be put towards transforming lives across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. A great cause, and another fun day at Tec Marina.

Tec Marina St David’s Day Bake Sale for Ty Hafan

Tec Marina bake sale

On March 1st, the people of Tec Marina baked and munched their way through traditional Welsh treats in honour of St David’s Day. We chose to donate all proceeds from the bake sale to Ty Hafan. In total we raised £212 for the Welsh children’s hospice. The selection of tasty treats included gingerbread bites, Welsh cheesecakes, iced sponge cake, shortbread biscuits, a leek and potato quiche, many different varieties of Welsh cakes, and delicious Welsh cake ice cream.

Big thanks to everyone that supported the day – diolch yn fawr iawn!

ITV Cymru Wales Away Day at Tec Marina

Last Saturday, we were very excited to welcome ITV Cymru Wales to Tec Marina for their annual company away day. The aim of the day was to set goals and spark ideas for the year ahead. Bringing their team together on a Saturday, meant that it was even more important to set the tone for a fun, engaging and inspiring day – and they felt this was exactly what Tec Marina could offer.

With nearly 100 people in attendance, ITV took over Tec Marina’s Atrium for talks, team building exercises, and interactive quizzes. They made use of our Upper and Lower Boathouse meeting rooms for break-out workshops, and challenged each other to games of ping-pong and air hockey in our Games Room.

Feedback from the event was extremely positive, with lots of comments on the creative and engaging environment that Tec Marina provides. ITV’s Planning Editor, Sarah Drew, said, “‘Tec Marina hosted the ITV Cymru Wales’ Away Day and I was delighted with the service they provided. It’s a great space, and all the staff were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to make it a successful day for us.”

It was a pleasure to host ITV and to work alongside their fantastic team throughout the preparation for the event; they are welcome back anytime. We hope they took away lots of bright ideas and feel ready for a successful 2017!

Keep an eye on our Twitter page for more images from the day.

10 reasons why we love sharing our workspace with other companies…

Sharing our workspace

We asked our residents to share with us the reasons why they enjoy sharing their workspace with other companies. Here’s what they had to say…

1. New Faces, New Friends

No two days are the same when you share a building with other companies. As a growing community, we always look forward to meeting new people and getting to know them.

2. A Cheery Atmosphere

Speaking with people outside of your organisation, you tend to chat about interests outside of work, and this generally keeps the conversation light and cheery. Between this and the bird song in our Atrium, it’s hard not to wear a smile around the place.

3. After-Work Clubs

Did you know Tec Marina has its very own Book Club? And a few of the guys play for the same football team? With multiple companies in the same building, you’re more likely to find common interests and make something of them.

4. Helping Each Other Out

Advice and support is always on hand. Need help setting up your new Fitbit? Looking for a decent plumber? More often than not, someone in the building is able to hook you up. Two hundred heads are better than one.

5. Feeling Part of Something Bigger

When you work for a small company it’s nice to getting the larger company feeling by meeting new people and taking part in office events. Christmas do’s and after work drinks are less fun when you work alone.

6. Chats by the Coffee Machine

How to make that stroll to the coffee machine last longer: Strike up a conversation with your fellow Tec Marina residents about your weekend plans or today’s weather.

7. Getting Stuff Done

Our co-workers all find themselves to be more productive when working from our shared workspace… despite the amount of time spent playing ping-pong.

8. A Bit of Healthy Competition

A bit of inter-company rivalry is good for us. It keeps us all pushing to become champions of the games room and Tec Marina gym.

9. Sharing is Caring

Whether it’s bringing in games for the SNES console, donating left over cake, or setting up a charity book stall at the top of the stairs, one man’s trash is usually another man’s treasure at Tec Marina.

10. Seeing Each Other Succeed

Hearing about the accomplishments and achievements of the companies within the building gives our community a huge buzz, and an even bigger sense of pride.

If you want to find our more about our growing community or if you would like more information about how to join us, get in touch with the Tec Marina team on 029 2167 8391 or contact@tecmarina.com

Children in Need – Ping Pong, Cake and Prizes

Children in Need

Last Friday was a truly fantastic and memorable day here at Tec Marina, not least because we saw some of the finest Ping-Pong playing the world has ever seen, but because we raised a whopping £1000.00 for Children in Need!

The ‘Cake Off’ stall, where our residents got a chance to show off their exceptional home baking skills, proved a particularly popular hang out, so it was just as well we had our Ping-Pong-athon to help burn the calories…

In addition, we held a hugely successful raffle with wonderful prizes, including a coffee machine and a personal training session, donated by our generous staff, residents and friends.

We’d like to extend a massive thank you to all of you that got involved and helped to raise such a brilliant sum for such a worthy cause!

Tec Marina Bootcamp – Week 1

Train together

On Monday, we started the week off right with our very first Tec Marina bootcamp session. Personal Trainer, Matt Bowring, took a group of 14 Tec Marina residents into our gym for a lunchtime fitness fix.

As this was the first session out of 8, we partnered up and went through some tough fitness tests, including timed cardio, press-ups and sit ups. We noted down our scores and will be using these as a starting point to track our progress over the next 8 weeks. Fitness tests out of the way, Coach Matt then made the decision to inflict some serious pain on the Tec Marina bootcampers with a group squatting session, and we certainly felt the burn.

Squats

But the pain will not be stopping there. Each bootcamper has been set some weekly homework. 2 x 20-min workouts are to be completed by everyone before next Monday. No excuses are valid when you have a gym in the same building as your office.

Session over, high fives all round, and time to hit the showers. Despite the wobbly legs, the afternoon saw a peak in motivation with lots of post workout endorphins floating around the place.

With a full house already booked for next Monday, we’re looking forward to seeing how far we can progress as a group over the next 8 weeks – Go team!

Health and well-being are high on the agenda at Tec Marina, and that’s why we want to offer sessions like these to our residents for no extra cost. Follow our progress over on our Twitter page.
