International Women’s Day at Tec Marina

International Women's Day Tec Marina

On Thursday 8th March, Tec Marina hosted a well-attended charity breakfast to mark International Women’s Day. We selected Welsh Women’s Aid as our chosen charity for the event. Eleri Butler MBE., CEO of Welsh Women’s Aid, joined us at the event to share insight into the work they do to end domestic abuse and all forms of violence against women.

The team from Scarlet Design came along to listen to the talk and illustrated Eleri’s main points and figures in their own, unique style.

Co-founder of fin-tech company Wealthify, Michelle Pearce, also spoke at the event with an interesting talk discussing why so few women invest their money. Michelle has been featured in ‘Wales’ 35 Under 35’ list of young professional women based in Wales for the past two years. Wealthify are based in Tec Marina and have recently made headlines after receiving a significant investment from insurance giant, Aviva.

International Women’s Day is held on March 8th each year and celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Tec Marina’s event is on track to raise over £500 for Welsh Women’s Aid.

Tec Marina founder, Chris Griffiths, shares why a creative workspace is worth the investment

Inspiring workspace, Tec Marina

Last week, our founder, Chris Griffiths, shared his experience of designing Tec Marina with those attending the Inspiring New Workspaces event that took place in St. Donat’s Castle.

So, with a growing software company already established, why did Chris decide to take the plunge and set up Tec Marina? He shares his three main motivations with us below…

A more engaged workforce
A huge thing for me was to create a space that promoted employee engagement. Happier and more productive employees are more engaged in their work. When employees are happy with their work environment, they are more likely to remain with the company for longer, reduce their number of sick days and feel proud of their organisation. A Havard Business Review investigation found that a happy workplace results in 31% higher productivity, 37% higher sales and 37% higher creativity levels. This is something that every Tec Marina company has benefited from.

Encouraging collaboration
In a space like Tec Marina, employees feel encouraged to get to know their co-workers and employees of neighbour companies. Spaces like our communal gym and games room not only boost productivity and wellness but can lead to the cross-pollination of ideas between departments, organisations and industries. This was a huge motivation for us, it’s exciting to see different companies working with and learning from one another.

Driving innovation
My lifelong passion is innovation. And environments like Tec Marina are built to foster it. Innovative ideas rarely emerge from behind a desk. We give companies a chance to give their employees the flexibility and space to relax, play and get fit. This kind of environment gives them the thinking space to spark creative connections between thoughts. New ideas are then fed back into each business.

If you are interested in bringing your business and team to Tec Marina, call us today on 029 2167 8391. We would love to show you our available spaces and introduce you to our friendly community.

Tec Marina’s Christmas Get Together

TM Christmas

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we wanted to celebrate it in true festive style here at Tec Marina. Yesterday, pens went down from 5 o’clock and the Tec Marina residents congregated in the Atrium for beers, wine and mince pies and waited for the entertainment to begin.

We were welcomed by the beautiful sound of concert harpist, Bethan Semmens, who treated us to traditional Christmas songs next to our Tec Marina Christmas tree.

With a slight change of pace, we then welcomed local singer, Darren Tyson, to the floor. Darren serenaded the crowd with lots of all-time favourites and Christmas classics – and a couple of dance moves too!

We’ve loved our first full year of being open and are proud to be a happy home to many of Wales’ top businesses. Thank you to all of our residents for their continued support, we look forward to another successful year in 2018.

Tec Marina does Children in Need 2018

Beks in Pudsey t-shirt

Last Friday, Tec Marina fundraised for Children in Need with cakes, raffle prizes and a ping-pong tournament. We’re proud to announce that this year our fun and games raised a total of £966.71!

Children in Need kicked off early this year with a week-long ping-pong tournament. Ping-pong has always been a sure-fire way to get residents up from their desks. This year’s tournament had 41 sign-ups and ran from round one on Monday through to the big Friday final. This year’s winner was George from Famous Publicity, with an impressive score of 36-19, winning him the coveted title and Tec Marina trophy.

Ping Pong tournament

For those whose skills lay in the kitchen rather than the games room, our Children in Need Bake Off was the time to shine. Our bake stall proved a popular hang out throughout the day and featured delicious home bakes such as gingerbread Pudsey biscuits, millionaire shortbread and lemon Madeira cake – and not a soggy bottom in sight. This year’s bake-off winner was Adriana from Scarlet Design for her sell-out carrot cake. Well done, Adriana.

Cake selection

In the build-up to Friday, residents had been kindly donating prizes to our Children in Need raffle. Our table of wonderful prizes included champagne, chocolates and luxurious smellies. The draw drew quite a crowd and Tec Marina Manager, Beks, did a great job of calling out all 31 winners.

Raffle draw

We’d like to extend a massive thank you to all those who got involved with the fun and helped us raise such a brilliant sum for a very worthwhile cause.

Community events, like Children in Need, are just one of the many reasons we love working in our shared workspace. If you’re interested in finding out about office or coworking space at Tec Marina – get in touch today 029 2167 8391 / contact@tecmarina.com.

OpenGenius’ Applied Innovation training held at Tec Marina

Applied Innovation Course

This September, OpenGenius hosted their 3 day Certified Applied Innovation course here in Tec Marina. The course pulled in 13 delegates from across the globe including the USA, China, France, Italy and Germany.

The course promised to boost the innovative thinking process of its students. Chris Griffiths, CEO and founder of OpenGenius, delivered interactive training sessions across the three days. On the final day, all trainees became accredited OpenGenius Licensed Instructors in Applied Innovation. They can go on to make use of the methodologies learned in Tec Marina to train their own clients and colleagues.

We wish them the best of luck in the future and hope to see them back at Tec Marina for another OpenGenius course soon.

Innovators set sail from Digital Festival 2017 to Tec Marina

As part of Digital ’17, Tec Marina played host as eager digital enthusiasts and entrepreneurs were, in true marina fashion, transported by boat from the Digital Festival through Cardiff Bay to Tec Marina. There, founder and CEO Chris Griffiths spoke live from the London Stock Exchange about his company’s journey so far and how OpenGenius, the ones behind Tec Marina, is the first Welsh company to be accepted onto the LSE’s Elite accelerator programme. A unique experience for all, Chris spoke of what an exciting time it is to be at the company right now.

As Digital Dozen finalists, OpenGenius took to the Showcase Stage to dazzle digital enthusiasts with their productivity and creativity-enhancing software tools at Digital Festival 2017 this week. Alongside a number of other tech companies based in Wales, OpenGenius pitched their technology tools to like-minded thinkers and investors in the digital sector. The festival, one devoted to ‘Innovation, Investment and Industry’ was a fantastic opportunity to showcase what Wales has to offer the global tech industry, and to mix with other companies to show off their products, iMindMap and DropTask.

Tec Marina runners gear up for the Cardiff Half Marathon

Tec Marina Running Team Tec Marina marathon team pose before their training session.

On October 1st, a group of 14 runners from various Tec Marina companies will take part in a half marathon spanning the whole city of Cardiff, with the route taking them right passed our office space.

The team are aiming to raise £3,000 for Tŷ Hafan, one of the leading UK children’s palliative care charities based throughout Wales. The charity ensures that local children suffering from terminal illnesses and their families can make the most out of their time left together.

Louise Cornelius, a runner from OpenGenius, said…

We all voted to decide on which charity to fundraise for… and I’m delighted that Tŷ Hafan won the vote. It’s great to be running for a charity so close to home!

You can donate to their cause on JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/companyteams/TecMarina

We wish them the best of luck on the day!

Tec Marina residents wrack their brains to raise money for charity

Tec Marina Quiz

The atrium of Tec Marina was packed yesterday as residents teamed up to test their general knowledge in a Battle of the Building Quiz and try their luck in a raffle. The event was a huge success with £225 being raised in aid of the Oxford Cystic Fibrosis Centre, which provides specialist care to adults with cystic fibrosis from across the Thames Valley. The resident responsible for organising the quiz, FRS Solutions employee Katie Hathaway, had this to say:

‘Cystic fibrosis is a medical and ethical nightmare at times, but the specialist doctors, nurses and emergency personnel who care for patients and make them feel as comfortable as possible are the real heroes. With a little extra funds and a little more awareness raised, we can be miniature heroes too.’

All of us here at Tec Marina are proud to have supported such a wonderful cause, and the winners of the quiz are no doubt proud to receive their fabulous prizes!

Tesla Day at Tec Marina

Tesla close up

Last Wednesday, the Tesla team travelled from Bristol in their finest and fastest cars to spend the day at Tec Marina. The fleet included the world’s quickest production car, the Tesla Model S P100D. As the cars pulled up outside, our residents soon came pouring out for a peek at the supercars.

Tec Marina residents enjoyed test drives throughout the day. At lunchtime, Tec Marina provided a buffet lunch, and the Tesla team presented a talk about the history, innovative technology and exciting future of the company, which drew in quite a crowd.

The day was a huge success, with the cars stirring up a big buzz of excitement around the building! Take a look at photos from the day below.

On Friday 24th March, we joined in the fun taking place around the country for Red Nose Day. Nothing gets Tec Marina’s atrium more full than the temptation of cake and table tennis tournaments, and our Red Nose Day had the two in abundance. We played sweep-stake games, ran ping pong competitions, and held a delicious bake sale. The total money raised around the UK on this year’s Red Nose Day is stand at a whopping £73,026,234 so far – and this figure is still rising! All donations will be put towards transforming lives across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. A great cause, and another fun day at Tec Marina.
